Little People: Murder in the Time of Covid – Inspector Painter Returns with Four Poisonings and No Obvious Connection - Paul Griffiths

Par LIBRE-LIVRE , le 25 Mai 2023

In this fifth outing for Inspector Bill Painter, Prof. Paul Griffiths immerses fans of his old-school detective deep in the world of poison and pharmacology.  Set during the Covid pandemic, and with nothing immediately linking this thriller’s four high-flying victims, the inspector realises he needs to look back before he can move forward.

This latest whodunnit from Prof Paul Griffiths finds wily Inspector Painter trying to solve four seemingly independent murders, set against the socially challenging times of the pandemic.

As with all his previous Inspector Painter instalments, the author merges his extensive scientific and medical expertise with his standout ability to create an intriguing and original crime scene that tests to the full the little grey cells of his protagonist.

With the victims in Little People meeting their untimely time through ricin poisoning (the same poison used in 1978 to kill Bulgarian dissident Georgi Markov, who was jabbed in the leg on Waterloo Bridge by a man carrying an infected umbrella), Inspector Painter fans will be delighted that the chaos of Covid still finds this old-school copper at the top of his game. And fingers crossed with no plans to retire just yet.

 Synopsis:

A VIP has been poisoned with ricin. Two more prominent people die the same way. There are no connections between the victims or between the few people who had opportunity to poison them. The coroner and Painter’s boss pile pressure on him to find the culprits. When a fourth case appears, Painter’s job is on the line. Will he be able to work out who is responsible before any more deaths occur?
Painter is an old-school policeman with a love of jazz who is not impressed with younger officers bearing university degree certificates. Modern crime, as well as modern life, challenge him to the limits as he untangles a complex web of intrigue. Set during the Covid-19 pandemic, this contemporary crime takes him into a world of revenge like no other.

Garnering five-star reviews, Amazon readers say:

“I've read other Insp Painter books and they all mix a crime mystery with true scientific and medical fact. Little People is an excellent story of topical interest and kept me guessing until the end. Great read.” – Henry

“Excellent read. Anyone who knows London will enjoy the descriptions of the City which serves as a backdrop to a series of intriguing murders during the COVID pandemic. Would highly recommend.” - Ben
